metamorphism

metamorphism
GLOSSARY OF VOLCANIC TERMS
In the stricktest sense (isochemical metamorphism), the process by which consolidated rocks undergo textural and mineralogical changes brought about by changes in temperature and/or pressure. The textural and/or mineralogical changes associated with metamorphism are thermodynamic responses to the physical conditions present in the metamorphic environment. In general, increasing metamorphism results in dehydration of the rocks, as well as an increase in the grain size of the rocks.
